Purpose of the Declaration for Compassionate Nursing Care

   1. To endorse the impact nurses make in providing charitable humanitarian nursing care through a model of health intervention that significantly addresses the physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, social and environmental aspects of an individual.

    2. To foster the empowerment of indigenous peoples through nursing health interventions that affirm each individual; promote a treat, teach and train approach through compassionate outreach, and prepare under-served individuals to transform their communities through active participation in maintaining their own health.

    3. To support the utilization of holistic nursing practices which acknowledge the multifaceted components of an individual (physical, emotional, mental, spiritual, cultural and family-centered components); recognizing each component as important and integral to the work of healing.

    4. To promote international safety sanctions for nurses as neutral citizens delivering charitable humanitarian services to the poor or under-served in areas of conflict.

“As nurses, health care professionals and public citizens unite together as one family in a spirit of love, partnership and concern  for the needs of the under-served throughout the world, we join with one voice, one heart and one spirit across the nations to let the life-centered work we do everyday be heard.  Thank you for making the difference. ”

We, the Nurses of the United States of America and Nations of the World, do so declare that this 'Global Declaration for Compassionate Nursing Care' supports the value of human life, patient and family-centered care, and promotes education and training as the building blocks which empower individuals to be active participants in maintaining their health.

We assert the importance of collaborative partnerships with other health care professionals. We partner with those we treat by teaching and training them to participate in their own care.

We promote the improvement of the human condition across the nations, seek to raise levels of awareness with global suffering, and offer services that address the health and welfare of individuals within diverse cultural and social circles.

We support the practice of holistic nursing care which emphasizes the importance of treating all components of an individual: the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual sum of the parts equaling the whole.

We endorse the essential role spirituality plays in healing the mind, body and spirit of individuals and its effect on elevating the human spirit. Furthermore, the 'Declaration for Compassionate Nursing Care' condemns global health atrocities, acts of violence or cruelties committed against men, women and children, the mentally ill and societal outcasts. All individuals deserve humane health care treatment.

We petition all nations to provide safety sanctions for nurses who, as neutral citizens, deliver charitable humanitarian care to areas in conflict. This declaration affirms the ability of nurses to administer compassionate care, foster health, promote spiritual renewal and offer the message of faith, hope, love and healing for all people.

We request that the United Nations, which internationally recognizes and upholds accepted principles such as those endorsed through human rights treaties, the United Nations Charter, and other doctrines and declarations that promote peace and human welfare, uphold and endorse this 'Declaration for Compassionate Nursing Care.'
